On this day, 72 years ago, the United States of America was thrust suddenly into a war that would change the world forever.
In the early morning of Sunday, December 7, hundreds of Japanese fighters, dive-bombers, and torpedo bombers launched from the carriers Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū, Hiryū, Shōkaku, and Zuikaku swarmed the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Although many air bases were attacked on the island, the main target was the U.S. navy station at Pearl Harbor.
Pictured is the remains of the USS Arizona burning after the attack, after a bomb detonated her million tons of ammunition, killing 1,177 of her crew. In all, the United States lost 4 battleships, three more were damaged, and the USS Nevada ran aground trying to flee; also the target ship Utah and the minelayer Oglala were sunk. 188 aircraft were destroyed, numerous other ships and equipment badly damaged.
The final death toll was 2,402 sailors killed, at the loss of 29 aircraft for the Japanese, as well as five midget submarines that were supposed to infiltrate the harbor.
As Franklin Delano Roosevelt put it, it is “a day that will live in infamy”, and indeed it has.
Rest in peace, those lost on in the attack, and those that remain with the Arizona on the bottom of Pearl Harbor.
